Last season’s writers’ strike caused nearly every non-reality show to have very short runs last season. Between the strike and Kiefer Southerland’s DWI conviction, 24 didn’t even have a season. As a result, TV fans across the nation have been bored with reality shows about modeling (yawn), or worse, they had to go get social lives.
But after 18 months of boredom, die-hards from coast to coast ditched their friends, upgraded their DVRs and got ready for an awesome 2008 Fall season. What they got instead was a bad Sex in the City ripoff, two mediocre X Files clones, and some terrible plotlines for their favorite returning shows.
TV is broken, here’s our proof: |
The Worst New Sitcom:
Kath & Kim
It is almost impossible to get viewers behind a show with entirely unlikeable characters. Even when you do it perfectly (It’s Always Sunny in Philidelphia), you’re limited to a niche audience at best. Kath & Kim chronicles a spoiled, self-involved woman-child and her enabling mother.
If we wanted to watch annoying people who are in love with themselves, we would have watched The Simple Life.
|
 |
The Worst New Serial:
Eleventh Hour
With more interesting actors than J.J. Abrams’ Fringe, and with Jerry Bruckheimmer at the helm, we’d hoped this would be interesting. Instead we found an utterly boring, sort of sci-fi show that in its debut chose to get at the forefront of the stemcell/cloning controversy. Of course nobody likes to be preached at, and they’re about six years too late to join the debate.
|
 |
The Worst Returning Serial:
Prison Break
This is what happens when TV executives get greedy, pure and simple. Prison Break was never supposed to last more than two seasons. But it was making money, so when some producer needed a new chinchilla-skin car cover, they asked “does this really have to be about people breaking out of prison?” Then they started bringing people back from the dead, and not wanting to spend much on the makeup budget, lasered off the ginormous tattoo covering Wentworth Miller’s top half. You’ve jumped the shark, please get off TV now.
|
 |
The Most Annoying Plotline:
Heroes
Every season is referred to by the show’s creators as a “volume.” First season was “Generations,” followed by “Exodus,” and now we are in the middle of “Villians.” Clearly Tim Kring is a fan of Empire Strikes Back, but who wants to tune in week-after-week to watch their favorite characters get their back-sides handed to them?
To compensate for such wimpy heroes, every time one of them dies, they are miraculously brought back (or turned into a triplet). As long as they keep this up, they’re going to lose tens-of-thousands of regular viewers every week.
|
 |
Final Thoughts
In The 40 Year Old Virgin Steve Carrell asked “is it true that if you don’t use it, you lose it?” And when it comes to writing compelling TV shows, the answer is a resounding yes. TV writers’ brains have atrophied from not working for so long. And we’re pretty sure they’ll get their groove back, but we have two questions…by the time they do, will anyone still be watching? And, anyone want to buy a used DVR?
Call us corporate shills, but it’s times like these, we’re seriously glad we have Netflix.

Have anyone watch the series “Life”? It has a wonderful cast and an interesting plot line. Also, “The Closer”, ” The Shield” and “Burn Notice” (although mid-season shows) are terriffic.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
oh.. also, “Damages” and “Raising the Bar:

I kinda agree with you, but one show that I have gotten to really enjoy has been Sons of Anarchy. I am not really into the biker scene, but this show really pulled me into it.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:19 am
Hey, at least 30 Rock is still pwning. That show is pure greatness.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:21 am
What about “The Shield”? One of the best shows ive ever seen and its finaly coming to an end, screw all the other trash…
November 18th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Can’t wait for Weeds, and the Trailer Park Boys next year. Garbage fall season.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:27 am
At least Terminator has been decent. Entourage has been weak, but True Blood is excellent.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:29 am
I agree about Kath and Kim. This horrible show is stuck in the middle of an otherwise good lineup.
November 18th, 2008 at 10:31 am
Some TV is broken, but keep looking. Try “Life”, “Life On Mars”, “Chuck”, or just about anything on BBC America!
November 18th, 2008 at 10:33 am
I completely agree, TV sucks and some of the shows I would have killed my mother to see have turned in to nothing but boring do I see Denny don’t I see Denny CRAP. I’ve even resorted to watching “Brothers and Sisters” a show I would’ve rather scooped my eyeballs out with a pitch fork then watch. What is a girl to do I’m on crutches for 6 weeks and the thing I thought would keep me occupied, has turned the next 6 weeks in to a prison sentence.

I agree. I stopped watching Heroes about 2 episodes into this season after being a diehard fan for the first two. I’m also probably the only person who enjoyed the Hiro-in-Japan storyline.
But it’s gotten ridiculous of late.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:15 am
I have to agree with you regarding Heroes. This season is just ridiculous..
November 18th, 2008 at 11:34 am
All the pay is coming from TV that is on cable. If you are really looking for story, I would say look at Hulu.Com or other sites that show CABLE television. It’s rare that we get a good show, but I am enjoying FRINGE currently
November 18th, 2008 at 11:37 am
At least we have True Blood to make up for all it.
Dexter also just took a turn for the crazy. Wasn’t sure where this season was going, but wow.
Entourage seems to be sliding by, nothing is really happening with this series any more. We get some good laughs, but no actual plot progression anymore. The past two seasons is Vince moping around. Yay.
Amazing Race is still amazing. Lots of hilarious mess ups by annoying people who end up getting kicked off.
Survivor has a pin-up model.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been pretty awesome this season!

While I agree every show mentioned belongs on this list (I even feel many more shows might need to be added), at least we have The Office, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (soon all the fans leaving Heroes will flock to this show) and bare with me… Smallville is amazing this season. I know, I know the crappy WB Superboy show right? Well no, at least not anymore.
This season is a new show with the same name. It’s a Superman TV show. Clark Kent is a mild mannered reporter working at the Daily Planet with Lois Lane and Jimmy Olson while secretly saving the people of Metropolis from the dangers of villains such as Doomsday or Brainiac. Teaming up with heroes from DC comics such as Aquaman, Green Arrow, The Flash or The Legion of Superheroes. With literally less than 1/40 of Heroes budget they consistently have better acting, special effects and most importantly writing than Heroes has had this season.
So while I agree there is a lot to loose heart about this year, I’m not ready to give up quite yet.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Couldn’t agree more on most of those. I have been a heroes defender since day 1, but after the first two episodes of this season I gave up, mostly due to this:
Season 2 - Nikki dies in a fire.
Season 3 - Nikki is back as a clone.
Season 2 - Linderman gets a hand through the brain.
Season 3 - Linderman is back as a ghost.
Season 2 - Nathan is gunned down at a press conference.
Season 3 - Nathan is healed.
Season 1 - Sylar killed
Season 2 - Sylar unkilled?

You failed to mention exactly how terrible season 5 of Entourage is.
November 18th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
I have to agree - tv networks must be saving money by hiring bad writers. Heroes was amazing the first season, pretty good in season two. But season 3 episodes feel like they are trying to stretch the story out further than it should have gone. British tv series have the right idea - short seasons and end it while still good.
November 18th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
yeah, spot on. Even 30 rock is sub par. And I think you’re looking for “Annorbing”
November 18th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
I’d have to agree with you, however, the Office is having one of its best seasons and 30 rock still kicks ass. And as you (rightly) pointed out, Always sunny in Phili is great.
November 18th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
24 two-hour special on Sunday and new series in January!
(he said on Leno it’s not the first two episodes but a one-off feature length story to explain the time inbetween season 6 & 7)
November 18th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Back a few years ago, NBC tried having a go of putting Battlestar Galactica on the network. They only tried it once or twice and decided to leave it on sci-fi.
Rather than let it build an audience, they decided to move it out of the way. The problem with the networks is that they’re afraid to take risks.
They just look at what works, and try their best to mimic it. A total lack of creativity on their part.
If you’re really interested in great television, look to HBO and Showtime. They take risks and it’s payed off time and time again.
November 18th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
I actually think “Kath & Kim” is very clever. These people are very geeky and hugely self-involved, but very likable in a sympathetic, “Michael Scott” sort of way.
November 18th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
entourage has been amazing.
new hbo series(es?) life and times of tim and summer heights high are hilarious.
the office has been down this season.
the truth is most shows stink. but hbo has been pulling through with comedy and entourage.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
Agreed, but I still find myself watching Prison Break even though it makes me sad.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
I wouldn’t rule out Dexter or CSI from this mix. Both made a southward turn to Dullesville mostly based on forced romantic plot lines which don’t fit the nature of the show. It is times like these that ‘the model shows’ provide a comfortable formulaic retreat from the scripted failures.
November 18th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Yah noticed this about all tv shows with 2 exceptions. Chuck and House. best shows ever!
November 19th, 2008 at 3:47 am
Try “Life, or “My Own Worst Enemy”, perhaps.
November 19th, 2008 at 4:58 am
I have to agree with you regarding Heroes. This season is just ridiculous..
November 24th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
@14:
Dexter has been awesome this season. Do you think Dexter will kill Miguel or let the legal system take him down and risk exposure?
December 6th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
I actually like Prison Break this season. The 24 movie was good too. I hope LOST is good, whenever it comes back. Other than that, TV is a useless, non-interactive pastime.
