When a movie franchise grows stale, Hollywood will often pull the plug, wait a couple years, then “reboot” the franchise with new actors, new plotlines, and a new feel. Sometimes this works great…Batman and Robin starring George Clooney and California’s governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was expensive, boring, and a total waste of just about everyone’s time. A few years later, Batman Begins offered audiences a darker look at the Dark Knight, and Batman was reborn in the form of Christian Bale. Then again, sometimes make Ang Lee’s Hulk or a boring Godzilla movie.
With the upcoming reboot of Star Trek, we’re forced to ask…Can J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias) bring the USS Enterprise out of the halls of Sci-Fi conventions (where middle-aged men dress in unfortunately tight-fitting spandex or Klingon makeup), and into the mainstream?
With an exciting new take and a younger cast (including Zachary Quinto from Heroes), it’s possible. And with that trailer, we’re excited to find out.
