When I was in college, a friend of mine ran a movie rental business for students out of his dorm room. As far as I know, he’s the only person who watches more movies than me. While this means I end up renting a lot of terrible movies, there are a handful that I’ve come across that are absolutely amazing that just about nobody has seen. Being the nice guy that I am, I’m going to share some of them with you and make your life better…go and rent these movies today and your life will be better.

#1Equilibrium (2002)
Ok, you may have seen this one…it spent about eight seconds in the theater and went unnoticed for a couple years after that, but now every time I ask video store clerks for recommendations, this seems to always be the second movie they mention (first being American History X).
Set in the not-terribly-distant future, Equilibium is the story of a society where emotions have been banned after World War III, when the government realizes that World War IV would destroy all of humanity. Christian Bale (who you love after seeing The Dark Knight five times and who you were happy to find out would be playing John Connor in Terminator 4) stars oppposite Taye Diggs (and how can you not love a guy with Digg in his name?) in this brilliant sci-fi flick about a government that abuses its power to the point that they drug all of society to keep them from feeling and that promises summary execution of anyone who stops taking their pills. |

#2 Swimming With Sharks (1994)
Anyone who’s ever seen The Usual Suspects or American Beauty knows that Kevin Spacey is a brilliant actor. If you were disappointed with 21 and want to see Kevin Spacey in an amazing movie, it’s time you see the first great movie he ever made.
Despite its title, this movie is nothing like Jaws. It features Spacey as a Hollywood big-shot who uses people and throws them away like Kleenex, until he pushes his assistant too far. Swimming With Sharks is intense and will have you wondering why you’ve never heard of it before now. |
 |
#3 Hard Candy (2005)
After Juno came out, everyone started talking about how great Ellen Page is. But her credibility as a great young actress was established when Hard Candy came out. Page plays a precocious 14-year-old girl named Hayley who meets a man on the Internet. The man, of course, turns out to be a predator who gets Hayley to come over to his house and asks to “take pictures of her.”
The movie takes a sudden turn when you realize Hayley knew what he was doing all along and she drugs and kidnaps her would-be predator. This movie will have you on the edge of your seat as it takes you through a scary psychological thrill-ride you won’t soon forget. |

#4 Brick (2005)
While I’m on the note of young actors establishing their serious talent, I have to talk about Brick. There was a time when it looked like Joseph Gordon-Levitt was going to be known as the kid from 3rd Rock From the Sun for the rest of his life. But today, Gordon-Levitt is in-demand after a great perfomance in Lookout and his upcoming roles as Cobra Commander in the live-action G.I. Joe movie and starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in next-year’s Akira.
And it all started with Brick. Brick is a low-budget independent movie about a high school student named Brendan (Gordon-Levitt) who tries to help his ex-girlfriend get out of a dangerous situation after she gets involved with the local drug ring. After watching this, you’ll want to see every new movie Gordon-Levitt does…even if you’re worried that a G.I. Joe movie is as bad an idea as when they turned Doom from a classic game into a blockbuster piece of garbage. |

#5 Dark City (1998)
Called “the best film of 1998″ by Roger Ebert, Dark City is about a man with amnesia who is being sought by police as a suspected serial killer. That becomes the least of his problems when he realizes that nothing is what it seems to be. Dark City is a cult-classic sci-fi movie that you want to accuse of stealing major plot points from the Matrix…but Dark City came out first.
Starring Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland, and Jennifer Connelly, Dark City is as well-acted as it is written — that is to say, brilliantly. Go rent this (and the other 4 movies) right now.

Yes, I have in fact seen all of those… and you know, maybe I should get back into the movie rental business…. hehe

Damn… I must watch too many movies. I’ll have to go with Brick as my fave. I love the dialogue and the very retro noir feel. Although, I tend to be partial to good movies with little known actors.
October 19th, 2008 at 2:14 am
I’ve seen the first movie and the last movie on the list. I thought the first movie was horrible but I did like Dark City. My brother in law recommended Hard Candy so I will check that out. What a dissapointment when I read that the kid from 3rd rock from the sun will be cobra commander I almost threw up.

I’ve actually seen most of those, and I really disagree with Brick. Its a fairly interesting movie, except when you realize that all of the characters are technically supposed to be in high school, and then the movie just seems completely ridiculous. I do like how they tried to emulate a film noir style though. That was pretty cool.

No one should ever recommend Hard Candy to anyone. Not that it’s that bad of a movie really, it’s just relies too much on shock value.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:02 am
haha, i own all of these movies. (renting movies in college would have been a good idea, i loaned out so many)
October 21st, 2008 at 12:46 pm
ive only seen equilibrium, but that one alone is amazing! definetly one of my fav movies
October 21st, 2008 at 11:35 pm
Great list, and nice intros to the films. Equilibrium and Dark City are both on my very short lists for all time movies. Curiously, I just revisited Equilibrium myself.
Haven’t seen Hard Candy, but given your other choices, I feel confident taking your recommendation.

“No one should ever recommend Hard Candy to anyone. Not that it’s that bad of a movie really, it’s just relies too much on shock value.”
Well he’s put paid to that then hasn’t he :-/
October 22nd, 2008 at 6:36 am
I haven’t seen any of these, and I watch quite a few. I guess anything that you call “lesser known” really depends on the perspective.
Waking Life is a flick that seems a bit more under the radar and I would highly recommend it.
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:02 am
I have seen only seen equilibrium and hard candy…looking into the others now….thanks
October 22nd, 2008 at 9:26 am
sounds like don is n ageist of sorts. sir i believe you under estimate how serious the drug industry can be at a teenage level. whether far fetched or not Brick is awesome. ever here of a thing called suspension of disbelief?
October 22nd, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Nice list, but you should put a spoiler warning on the ‘Hard Candy’ section.
October 22nd, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Hard Candy is an AMAZING movie. I would highly recommend it to anyone out there… I need to check out the other movies now…
October 22nd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
I actually haven’t seen any of these films. Thanks for the recommendations.
October 23rd, 2008 at 4:33 pm
Nice list! Some interesting, off-kilter films. can i add a few? Dead Alive, Meet The Feebles, Human Nature, i <3 Huckabees, Way Of The Gun, Ghost Dog, Spellbound, Following. And of course, no list is complete without my fave, Battle Royale.
October 24th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
At Play in the Fields of the Lord is an amazing movie that you should see, but probably haven’t.
October 24th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
i loved hard candy.
ellen page is brilliant.
October 25th, 2008 at 1:32 am
Nice list man. Good to see some recommendations that are not your typical fave list. im definitely gonna go rent hard candy and swimming with sharks, im surprised i havent seen them yet.
October 25th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Another one that people need to check out is “A Dog’s Breakfast.” It’s written, directed, and starred in by David Hewlett, who is best known for his role on “Stargate: Atlantis” but it’s definitely not a sci-fi thing. It’s about a recluse named Patrick whose sister Marilyn and her sci-fi soap opera star fiance Ryan come to visit. Patrick overhears a conversation on the phone between Ryan and someone, and comes to the conclusion that Ryan is planning to kill Marilyn, so he tries to kill Ryan. But then, Ryan runs into an accident and actually does die, and Patrick tries to cover it up. It’s a dark comedy that was very low budget but extremely good. You can look up some clips on YouTube.
October 25th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
No list is complete without Donnie Darko.
October 26th, 2008 at 1:58 am
But everyones already seen donnie darko
October 26th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Great list. You obviously have diverse tastes, which makes your picks interesting! Hard Candy and Dark City are excellent movies - now I’m going to check out Equilibrium.
October 26th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
OK you’ve got me - I’ve not seen any of those, although I did hear about Hard Candy when it came out. So I’ve got all 5 on my LoveFilm list now - will let you know how it goes!
October 26th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
ninjalicious- totally agree on meet the feebles, but not so much on i <3 huckabees. i’m pretty sure everyone has seen that. and i agree with caleb on waking life. another awesome movie is scotland pa, which is an adaptation of mcbeth set in the 70s with cristopher walken…amazing!
oh, and EVERY list is complete without donnie darko. i’m so sick of people’s obsession with that fricken movie!
October 27th, 2008 at 8:27 am
The only one on this list I’ve seen is “Swimming With Sharks” and it’s definitely worth seeing. Especially if you have any ideas about working in Hollywood!

ive seen number 1 and 5… it makes me sad that equilibrium is so underrated…and darkcity is plain f****d-up in a good way..i love it=)
October 27th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
I agree with the list, never seen hard candy or swimming with sharks but I’m going to now. Another great movie that many people might not have seen is called Dear Wendy. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0342272/ It’s dandy.
October 28th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Dark City is one of my favorite films, along with Donnie Darko and Slingblade.
Good list tho.
October 28th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is amazing in Brick. However, if you want to see him really knock it out of the park, rent the AMAZING Mysterious Skin.
It is criminal that he didn’t even score an Oscar nomination for that performance.
October 30th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
I saw Hard Candy and Brick a few years ago… both excellent. I showed Brick to a few friends not that long ago and let’s just say they couldn’t notice a good movie if it punched them in the face.
November 1st, 2008 at 11:16 am
Dead Mans Shoes is a brilliant film, definitely one of if not the best british films ive seen
November 6th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
Hard Candy is a brilliant film!! I’ve been meaning to see Brick. I may just go do that this weekend. Good list though!
November 6th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

)
thanks for sharing.
November 7th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
I was proud that I had seen 2 of these movies and quickly added the rest to the top of my netflix list. I shall be watching them in 2 days time!
November 8th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Great list. I haven’t seen Brick yet, but I agree with you about the others so I will definitely be renting it soon. I loved Equilibrium. Thanks for the reviews.
November 8th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Seen four of the five. They were all great. but most people struggle to keep up while watching these movies.
November 9th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Why is the movie THURSDAY not on this list?
November 10th, 2008 at 1:39 am
Mysterious Skin is amazing with Joseph Gordon-Levitt but it is such a messed up movie.
December 5th, 2008 at 3:43 am
Brick is the best here, Equilibrium is great in its own right too
December 13th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
I sawbrack about two years ago and loved it. I had to watch it twice though to fully understand what was going on
December 15th, 2008 at 12:37 am
Great list. I like the fact that Equilibrium was your number one choice. I remember seeing it in theaters back in 2002; back when I was going through my phase of being obsessed with Christian Bale movies.
Seen all of the above and love nearly all of them. Dark City was a very good movie, just one of those movies I didn’t get much enjoyment out of. Hard Candy should be changed to Hard to Watch…not because it’s a bad movie, but due to the fact that you feel so dirty after watching it.
January 12th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
Great, great list! I’m happy to say I’ve seen everyone (and own a couple of ‘em on DVD).
